Children’s slumber bags -although similar, should not be confused with sleeping bags since they are mostly meant for indoor use- can be great things to have on hand for a variety of different circumstances. They can be used for camping, depending on the weather; can be used for having a children’s sleepover; or can be used for those extra cold nights or emergency situations where you lose power or heat to your home. The following are some tips to consider when choosing the right slumber bag.
The first thing to consider, possibly the most important, is the design of the sleeping bag. No matter how warm or how good the quality is, it won’t do your child any good if he or she doesn’t like it. Especially in the case of younger children, consider buying a slumber bag with your child’s favorite color, design, or favorite movie or cartoon character. One way to help with this is to bring your child along. Depending on your child’s age, he or she could help you choose.
Choosing the correct size is the next important consideration; size does matter. Having a slumber bag that is too large for your child can be dangerous. Though this may not necessarily be the case for a nine-year-old, a much younger child could be in danger of being smothered if the sleeping bag is too large.
The second reason is heat. Although certainly not as important as the first, buying a slumber bag that is too large for your child could result in heat loss. Since the point of a slumber bag is to keep your child warm and comfortable, heat loss is not desirable.
Slumber bags, much like sleeping bags, come in a variety of different heat ratings. Choosing the right one depends on some different factors. Factors such as what you plan to do with it, when you plan to use it, whether you plan to store it for emergencies, and how cold it is in your area are all factors that come into play when selecting the appropriate one. Especially in the case of emergency use, you want to make sure that the slumber bag is constructed from durable materials.
Although this list is far from being comprehensive, it should be enough to get you started in choosing a slumber bag that will provide your child with a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience.
